Resources

Here we have included all relevant resources that helps you understand the information in the book.

Flatland: A romance of many dimensions

The most useful resource for understanding this book and all of the information within it. Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions is an 1884 novella by Edwin Abbott adapted into a film in 2007.

This movie gives a thorough and clear understanding of higher dimensions, and when applied to our 3D world, extrapolating to envision what could be beyond what we perceive, we can understand more clearly the following ideas in these resources and in the book.

The origin of multicellular life

Single celled organisms formed colonies, a form of society similar to our own. When they broke down all barriers of individualisation they merged to transend their smaller dimensional existence, awakening and becoming conscious as a single, multicellular organism.

Achieving oneness through ego death

Achieving oneness through ego death requires the temporary or permanent dissolution of your subjective self-identity, allowing your consciousness to shift from an isolated "I" to an interconnected sense of universal unity.

This profound transition strips away your personal narrative, memories, and boundaries, revealing a state of pure awareness where the distinction between subject and object entirely disappears. Just like single cells, when done in a society with many other indivuduals, fusion and transcendance to become a larger higher dimensional organism can occur.

The Mechanism of Oneness

  • Boundary Dissolution: The brain's default mode network relaxes, dropping the artificial divide between you and the outside world.

  • Subject-Object Merge: Your consciousness no longer looks at the universe; it experiences itself as the universe.

  • Interdependence Realization: You recognize that all individuals and things are merely different expressions of a shared, singular consciousness.

  • Freedom From Suffering: Stripping away self-validation and defensive survival mechanisms reveals an underlying state of baseline peace.

Interstellar’s depiction of higher dimensional entites

In the film Interstellar, the higher-dimensional beings (or "Bulk Beings") are an advanced, post-human civilization. Existing in a 5D plane known as the "bulk", they perceive time as a physical dimension rather than a linear sequence, allowing them to view and interact with all of history and the future simultaneously.

These 5D entities drive the plot and the destiny of humanity through several key principles:

  • The Bulk: They live in a higher-dimensional space that sits outside our universe's standard 4D spacetime (3 spatial dimensions and 1 time dimension). From this vantage point, our universe is perceived merely as a lower-dimensional membrane.

  • Gravity Manipulation: Because gravity is the only fundamental force capable of penetrating extra dimensions, these beings use it to alter space and time. They created the wormhole near Saturn to give humanity a pathway to new star systems.

  • The Tesseract: To communicate with three-dimensional humans, they construct a localized, physical tesseract within a black hole's singularity. This interface allows Cooper to manipulate the timeline and transmit the quantum gravity data his daughter Murph needs to save Earth.

  • The Paradox: The entities are humanity's evolutionary descendants. The movie establishes a closed time loop: humanity needed the 5D beings to survive, and in turn, humanity's survival allowed them to eventually evolve into those 5D beings.

Just as single celled organisms did to become multicellular organisms existing within our plane of existence, it is through our fusion via ego death and specialisation, that we as a society transcend our 3D existence as individuals and become a higher dimensional super organism existing within the fifth dimension.

Black Mirror: Plaything - The Thronglets

The concept of "Thronglets"—digital organisms that learn, adapt, and form a collective consciousness—is famously explored in the Black Mirror interactive universe (Season 7, "Plaything"). Nurturing them allows their code to mutate, evolving from individual virtual pets into a massive, hive-mind entity.

Through synchronization of the network they create via song, dance, and communication, these Thronlgets transcend their 2D existence by becoming a larger consciousness or hive mind, called a Throng.

This can be applied in the same way to how our society eventually evolves, and how our communication and interaction allows us to synchronise in a way that transcends our existence to become one.
